Patrick Wildgust – The Beauties of Sterne

An illustrated talk by the curator of Shandy Hall in North Yorkshire, the home of the eighteenth century writer Laurence Sterne and the man credited with inventing the modern novel – Tristram Shandy. Wildgust will examine Laurence Sterne’s inﬂuence on what constitutes a ‘book’ and consider why Italo Calvino referred to Tristram Shandy as the ‘undoubted progenitor of all avant-garde novels of our century’ – with contemporary examples from the collection at Shandy Hall.
