An illustrated talk by the curator of Shandy Hall in North Yorkshire, the  home of the eighteenth century writer Laurence Sterne and the man credited with inventing the modern novel – Tristram Shandy. Wildgust will examine Laurence Sterne’s influence on what constitutes a ‘book’ and consider why Italo Calvino referred to Tristram Shandy as the ‘undoubted progenitor of all avant-garde novels of our century’ – with contemporary examples from the collection at Shandy Hall.
